Recreational Teams
New Format For MBSC Rec Program!
MBSC is excited to introduce a new format for our REC program. After much research and discussion we will be implementing a program that combines the benefits of individual teams and academy style instruction.
In short, each age/gender group in the U8 through U12 group will have a structured training session with the Director of Coaching (DOC) every week. Additionally, each team will then have a team practice with their coach and also their weekend games. The DOC will move each age/gender group through a battery of skills through the course of the season. The details of the plan can be found here. Recreational Development Plan. The U6 and U14 group will recieve one session per month.
Also, technical coaching instruction session for all coaches will be held about every two weeks through out the season. Sessions start the week of August 11 and the first three are targeted to coaching introduction and age-appropriate techniques. Click here for the Current DOC Coaching Sessions.
The benefits of this will be:
-
Lighten the load on the volunteer coach
-
Provide a progression of technical skills previously not available to the rec player
-
Keep the “team” aspect
-
Exposure to technical skills for both the players and coaches
-
Develop the player and encourage the coaches
MBSC Rocks the DC Cup!
6/1/2008

The tide remains high for the Melbourne Beach Soccer Club as their recreational teams continue to demonstrate the club’s success at all levels and age groups. Following 5 BYSL comp championships in Palm Bay two weekends ago, several MBSC rec teams participated in the DC Cup championships held over two weekends. Games were played in Port St. John on May 17th and 18th and in Titusville on May 31st and June 1st.
MBSC teams that participated included two U16 coed teams, one coached by Dave Glionna and the other by Mike Mullen; a U14 girls’ team coached by Tod Hagan; a U10 boys’ team coached by Dean Pekmezian; and a U8 boys’ team coached by Mitch Greenberg.
Coach Greenberg’s U8 Maroon Tide rolled into the DC Cup with an unblemished record. The boys played well all season and already had two wins in their first two DC Cup games. They then met up with a talented All-Star squad from Indian River for their last match of the season. The boys from Melbourne Beach played hard and did their best but came up short against Indian River. Coach Greenberg said that “all the kids were proud of their accomplishments and that the team prides itself on being the youngest team in the league with no true U8 players and therefore are already talking about next season.” The team was led by the Downie brothers with major contributions from Matt Senft-Greenberg, Calvin MacDonald, Logan Laub, Liam Pelikan, and Duncan Schwarze. Joe Laub is the assistant coach with special thanks to Tsunami U13 player Mike Senft-Greenberg for teaching the boys some cool moves.
The U10 boys’ team from Melbourne Beach also made a good run through the DC Cup tournament. After losing 6 to 2 Saturday morning in Titusville to a well-coached squad from Indialantic, the Melbourne Beach Panthers pounced back on Saturday afternoon by beating DMS (Divine Mercy Soccer Club) 4 to 2 and earned a birth in the championship game. Having to face Indialantic again on Sunday, a team that had a fantastic season and had yet to be defeated all year, the Melbourne Beach boys rallied from a 1 to 0 half-time deficit and scored two goals in the second half and held on for a 2-1 win and the DC Cup championship. Coach Dean Pekmezian was impressed with the players on both halves of the field. He was quick to praise the Indialantic fans, players, and coaches when he said “the DC Cup is a great opportunity for the young players to go
up against strong competition like Indialantic; a team with enthusiastic, knowledgeable fans and good coaching. Our boys had to play the best game of their season, and they did. Most importantly, the boys learned the valuable lesson of what can happen when you believe in yourself and work as a team to accomplish things never yet done before.” The Panthers’ – Front Row: Jakob Goodrich, Nicholas Pekmezian, Tai Miller, Tyler Adams. Back Row: Assistant Coach Mike Goodrich, Paul Tenewitz, Hunter Hafer, Austin Altevogt, Scott Perryman, Courtland Crain, Head Coach Dean Pekmezian
Coach Pekmezian, who also coached the U11 girls comp champions from Melbourne Beach, credits the leaders of the MBSC and the many well-informed and passionate volunteers for the overwhelming success the MBSC teams have had over the last year. “MBSC is a united club, founded and still run by dedicated volunteers who are laser focused on customized player enjoyment and development. The club offers something for all ranges of players; from children who want to get some sunshine and exercise while making new friends to the serious competitor looking for the most advanced soccer training available.”
The Melbourne Beach U14 girls’ team coached by Mike Abdon and Tod Hagan had a successful season and went into the tournament without a loss. The DC Cup competition was strong and the Coach Hagan’s team narrowly missed a 3rd place tournament finish by losing to Space Coast 1 to 0. Hagan noted that “both teams fought hard and played clean spirited soccer.” The team members participating in the DC Cup were: Kelly Perryman, Erica Turner, Jessie Karlovitch, Kat Bress, Brooke Abdon, Margret Eyjolfsdottir, Kimberly Fox, Rowan Morse, Kristen Rich, Alexa Apt, Desiree Corbin, Samantha Howe, Alex Hagan, Talia Greene and Courtney Smith.
Coach David Glionna’s U16 coed team finished in 3rd place. Team members include Ashley Akins, Matthew Akins, Patricia Cornelius, Alexi Howe, Biata Glionna, Travis Grant, Distin Morris, Emily Noble, Stephane Norman and Zackery Snow.
Coach Mike Mullen’s U-16 coed 2008 Dream Team captured 2nd place. Coach Mullen’s said that his team’s results “were largely due to their stay in the games for every point and never say die attitudes.” Mullen’s also credits the other Melbourne Beach U16 coed team for “a full season of friendly sibling rivalry that ultimately pushed both teams into top placing.” The Dream Team offense was lead by Cheyne Angy and Mac Schauman while the defense was secured by goal keeper Hunter Butcher as well as defender Tori Perry. Other significant contributions were made by Will Brunosson, Andy Turse, Kristen Downey, Mariel Mullen, Hailee Bates and Andrew Binns.
Recreational Program Info
Recreational soccer is designed to provide an enjoyable opportunity for players both to learn the game, and to develop the skills necessary to play it well. Our teams comprise a whole gamut of experience - from raw beginners to children who play every season. Our emphasis is on having fun
MBSC recreational program is designed with the purpose to offer an opportunity for kids of all ages to have fun and to learn about the game of soccer by playing it. While the playing is up to the players, having fun is not restricted to them. Coaches, referees, parents, and other family members are also invited to focus on having fun and learning more about soccer. The League provides the opportunity, MBSC provides the means and you do the rest. A certain level of competitive spirit is good, but it is everyone’s responsibility to keep the focus on learning and having fun.
Brevard Youth Soccer League and Melbourne Beach Soccer Club have two playing seasons: Fall, which runs from from August through to the end of November and Spring which runs from March through early June. Games are typically played on Saturdays. We serve children aged 4 – 18 years old. Our Recreational teams are coached by volunteer coaches, whom MBSC supports by training and educating through regular clinics, seminars, and hands-on coaching sessions.
